LOS ANGELES - The Lions grabbed their first win of the season on Thursday afternoon, taking down Western Michigan, 3–1, and giving head coach
Kolby O'Donnell his first victory with LMU.
The Broncos struck first, jumping out early in set one. LMU chipped away with kills from
Delfina Schuh,
Maddie Boerstra, and
Sophie Stephenson, plus an ace from Boerstra, but WMU stayed in control and took the opener, 25–18.
The Lions answered right back in set two. A kill from
Kaitlyn Evans sparked a run that pushed LMU ahead, and Schuh capped another stretch with an ace to make it 16–7. The Lions never let up, finishing the set on a three-point run to even things up, 25–14.
Set three was all LMU early with a 7–1 run to start. The Broncos cut it close, but back-to-back kills from
Sophia Keene and Schuh kept the Lions in front. LMU closed strong again, scoring the last five points and sealing it with a
Cecily Bramschreiber ace, 25–19.
In the fourth, both teams traded points, and the score stayed tight until Schuh fired up a 4–0 run to give LMU some breathing room. From there, the Lions controlled the finish and wrapped it up with a 25–18 win to take the match, 3–1.
Boerstra led the way with 16 kills, Stephenson added 12, and Schuetz posted six blocks. Schuh ran the offense with 35 assists. As a team, LMU outhit WMU .241 to .183 and finished with 51 kills compared to the Broncos 41.
Next up, the Lions are back at Gersten Pavilion tomorrow night for a big matchup against No. 19 BYU at 6 p.m.
