SPOKANE, Wash. – LMU and Gonzaga traded the lead eight times on the road Thursday night, with the Lions pulling in front of the Zags with just over 10 minutes to play. The Bulldogs used a late surge over those final 10-plus minutes to pull away and take the game, 73-53.
Gonzaga took a 19-7 lead in a low-scoring first 12 minutes of action. The Lions responded with a 13-0 run over the next 4:41 to take their first lead of the game 20-19 at the 3:21 mark of the first.
Myron Amey, Jr. started the run with a layup, then a pair of
Caleb Stone-Carrawell jumpers, a
Jevon Porter Dunk, and an
Aaron McBride layup followed to pull LMU back within a possession.
Jan Vide converted a three-point play to give the Lions the one-point advantage, 20-19.
After the Bulldogs scored the next four points, Stone-Carrawell hit a three for his 10
th point of the half. The Zags took a 27-24 lead into intermission.
Porter came out of the locker room with the first points of the second half to pull LMU back within one.
Stone-Carrawell led the Lions with 20 points and hit back-to-back jumpers to bring the Lions back within one, once again. Porter followed with a three to push LMU ahead, 35-33, for a 7-0 run all within less than a minute.
After Gonzaga rattled off six unanswered, the Lions scored the next four as a Porter tip-in dunk tied the game at 39-all with 13:17 remaining. That dunk pushed Porter over the 1,000 career threshold for his collegiate career.
A few free throws pushed the Zags back up four before Stone-Carrawell hit this third three of the game to bring the Lions back within a point. Vide hit two free throws to put LMU back on top, 44-43.
Porter scored 15 on the night including one more go-ahead shot with 10:27 on the clock to give LMU a 46-45 lead.
Gonzaga then went on a 16-0 run that turned into a 22-2 run and a 28-7 run to close the game.
Vide scored the game's final basket to give him nine points off the bench. Vide finished a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line as well.
LMU's 56 points scored is the lowest for the team since conference play began. The Lions held Gonzaga to a season-low two made threes on 18 attempts (11.1 percent).
The Lions return home for a quick turnaround Saturday night. San Francisco comes to Gersten Pavilion following their home win over Saint Mary's on Thursday evening.
