Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lions Earn Double-Digit Win Over Pepperdine, Merkviladze Becomes 38th Player to Score 1,000 Points at LMU

LOS ANGELES – LMU men's basketball scored 93 points on Saturday night, the most against a Division I opponent this season as the Lions swept Pepperdine this year. LMU won by 11, 93-82, on 51.5 percent (34-for-66) shooting and hit 13 threes, the most since conference play began.

Jevon Porter started the scoring against his old team with a tip-in offensive rebound dunk before the Waves went on an 11-2 run. Porter scored 16 points against his previous school, and led the Lions with six rebounds.

Alex Merkviladze's layup in the middle of that run was his 1,000th career point while playing for the Lions over the last four year. Merkviladze would go on to score a team-high 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting.

Pepperdine's first half lead grew to as large as eight before Will Johnston and Merkviladze hit back-to-back threes to pull the Lions back within two, 19-17, with 9:46 to play in the opening half.

LMU's first lead since the opening basket came on back-to-back dunks by Rick Issanza heading into the final 4:45 of the half.

Porter hit his second three of the half to make it a two-possession game with three minutes remaining until intermission. A layup by Johnston extended the lead to five with 1:11 to play before the break before Pepperdine pulled back within a point, 37-36, at halftime.

Despite Johnston hitting one of his three threes on the first possession of the second half, the Waves did retake the lead on three different occasions over the first three minutes after the teams returned to the court.

Threes by Johnston and Myron Amey, Jr. bookended a 17-7 run that turned a tie game into a 63-53 lead for the Lions with 11:58 to play. Johnston scored 19 and Amey added 10 points.

The threes continued to fall as Stone-Carrawell hit up to push the lead to 12 at 10:08 and Merkviladze hit another to push the lead to 13. Stone-Carrawell scored 12 as one of five Lions in double-digits.

Jan Vide hit a layup to start a 6-0 run that gave LMU their largest lead of the night at 18 points with 5:52 to play. Vide scored four points and led the team with six assists.

A 15-5 Pepperdine run over the next 4:06 cut the lead back down to single digits as the Waves pulled within eight points. Amey hit LMU's 13th three of the night to stop the run and help secure the double-digit win for LMU.

The 46.4 percent (13-for-28) clip from three was the best for LMU since conference play began.

LMU outran the Waves, scoring 12 fastbreak points to Pepperdine's zero.

The Lions will close the season on Thursday night against the West Coast Conference regular season champions. Saint Mary's comes to Gersten Pavilion on Thursday night in a nationally broadcasted game on CBS Sports Network.

Prior to the game, the Lions will honor the five members of the program's senior class: #4 Will Johnston, #10 Lamaj Lewis, #22 Rick Issanza, #23 Alex Merkviladze, and #25 Caleb Stone-Carrawell.
