LOS ANGELES — LMU outlasted Utah State in a tight defensive battle Friday night, securing a 63–58 win at Gersten Pavilion.
Maya Hernandez led the Lions with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, adding three rebounds and a steal in an efficient effort inside. Jess Lawson followed with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, while also contributing four assists and four steals. Andjela Matic added 10 points, four assists and two steals, and Zawadi Ogot provided eight points and five rebounds off the bench to round out LMU's balanced offensive night.
LMU controlled the glass throughout the game, finishing with a 36–24 rebounding advantage and 16 offensive boards. The Lions turned those extra chances into 13 second-chance points while holding Utah State to none. LMU also dominated the paint, outscoring the Aggies 36–30, and forced 21 turnovers that led to 27 points on the other end.
The Lions edged Utah State 15–14 in a defensive first quarter, overcoming cold shooting by forcing six turnovers and generating extra possessions. Lawson set the tone early with four points and two rebounds, while Heidger and Hernandez added timely scoring inside.
Both teams struggled to score in the second quarter, combining for just 15 points as LMU entered halftime tied 22–22. Lawson grabbed seven rebounds in the period alone, while Krajina and Matic each knocked down a three to keep the Lions level.
The pace picked up in the third quarter, where each team scored 17 points. Matic scored seven in the frame as LMU shot 53%, sending the game into the fourth tied 39–39.
LMU delivered its strongest quarter in the fourth, shooting 61.5% and outscoring Utah State 24–19 to close out the win. Lawson scored six points in the period, and five different Lions contributed as LMU maintained control down the stretch.
LMU hit the road to take on Wichita State on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 2:30 p.m. PT.
