LMU Drops Hard-Fought Road Contest at Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. — LMU fought to the final buzzer in a 71–64 road loss at Wichita State on Saturday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena.

Jess Lawson posted a season-high 27 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Lions, while Zawadi Ogot added a season-high 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Maya Hernandez finished with 10 points, two blocks, and two steals, and Allison Clarke contributed seven points, including two three-pointers, in her season debut.

Wichita State jumped out to an early lead in the opening minutes, but LMU answered with composed offense and physical play to stay within reach. Ogot provided an early spark, converting a second-chance free throw before following it with a strong turnaround jumper in the paint. Hernandez anchored the Lions inside, while Lawson added a second-chance basket to keep pressure on the Shockers. Carly Heidger capitalized on a Wichita State turnover with a driving layup, and Clarke made an immediate impact in her first action of the season by knocking down a three-pointer. LMU's balanced scoring and defensive activity kept the Lions within striking distance, trailing 18–13 at the end of the first quarter.

LMU delivered its most efficient stretch of the first half in the second quarter, matching Wichita State point for point with 19 apiece while shooting 52.9% from the field. Hernandez set the tone early, scoring six points on three layups in the opening 90 seconds, including a driving finish off an opponent turnover. The Lions continued to capitalize inside and off defensive pressure, with Heidger converting a second-chance jumper and Clarke drilling her second three-pointer of the game to provide a late spark. LMU generated a 6–0 run during the period and controlled the paint, scoring 16 of its first-half points inside while holding Wichita State to just 10. Despite the surge, the Shockers carried a 37–32 lead into halftime.

The Lions continued to battle in the third quarter by leaning on their interior presence and defensive activity. LMU matched Wichita State with 12 points in the paint and held a 5–4 edge in second-chance points, creating extra possessions through hustle and rebounding. Lawson led LMU with seven points in the period, attacking the rim and finishing through contact, including a driving layup late in the quarter. Heidger added a fast-break layup off an opponent turnover, capitalizing on LMU's defensive pressure. Despite shooting challenges from the perimeter, the Lions stayed aggressive inside and forced four turnovers before Wichita State closed the quarter ahead 52–46.

LMU continued to compete down the stretch in the fourth quarter, putting together a strong push behind a 10–0 scoring run midway through the period. Lawson led the Lions offensively, scoring 11 of her team-high points in the final frame while attacking the paint and converting at the free-throw line. The Lions generated quality looks through ball movement and second-chance opportunities, trimming the deficit and keeping pressure on Wichita State late. Despite the rally, the Shockers were able to close out the game at the line, as LMU came up short, 71–64.
