LOS ANGELES – The Lions defeated the Denver Pioneers, 64-57, Sunday evening in Gersten Pavilion. 

Maya Hernandez was a force on the floor, leading all scorers with 25 points on 11-for-19 shooting. She also pulled down 10 boards for her first double-double of the year. Jess Lawson and Carly Heidger each added eight points to help pace the Lions.

It was a slow start for both teams in the first quarter, but LMU found its rhythm late, outscoring Denver 15-8. Mari Somvichian came out firing, knocking down a pair of threes as the Lions shot 66.7% from deep in the opening frame.

Hernandez took over in the second quarter, dropping 10 points while shooting 5-for-7 from the floor. LMU closed the half strong, scoring the final four points to go up 33-20 at the break.

The Lions came out hot in the third, extending their lead to 17 after a jumper from Zawadi Ogot. DEN responded with a trio of threes to cut the lead to single digits, but LMU held steady and entered the fourth up 49-38.

DEN made things interesting late, trimming the deficit to six, but LMU's strong first half proved to be the difference. Even though the Pioneers outshot the Lions in the fourth, LMU held on to secure the win.

Up next, the Lions hit the road to take on Nevada on Thursday, Nov. 13, in Reno, NV.
