LOS ANGELES – The Lions opened the season with a tough 64-60 loss to the Utah Valley Wolverines Wednesday night at Gersten Pavilion.

Ivana Krajina made a strong first impression in her LMU debut, dropping 15 points, pulling down four boards, and adding a few assists. She went 5-for-11 from the field and 4-for-7 from deep. 

Carly Heidger also chipped in 12 points and four assists, while Maya Hernandez and Jess Lawson each grabbed eight rebounds. Hernandez added 11 points of her own.

LMU came out hot in the first quarter, leading by as many as seven and holding a 17-12 advantage after one. Utah Valley answered back in the second, outscoring the Lions by 10, but LMU still took a slim 34-33 lead into halftime.

Hernandez led all scorers at the break with 11 points, and the Lions were shooting 45.8% from the floor compared to UVU's 42.9%.

Krajina caught fire in the third, scoring eight points and hitting two big threes. The Lions had their best offensive stretch of the night that quarter, shooting 60% from the field, 80% from three, and 80% from the line to stay up 52-51 heading into the fourth.

But things got away from LMU in the fourth. UVU went on an 11-0 run to go up by eight with just over five minutes to play. The Lions battled back with six straight points to cut it to 62-60, but couldn't get the shots to fall late as the Wolverines held on for the win.

The Lions are back in action Sunday, Nov. 9, taking on the Denver Pioneers in Gersten Pavilion.
