Lions Power Past Fullerton 73–62 Behind Balanced Attack

FULLERTON, Calif. — LMU used a balanced attack and a disruptive defense to take down Cal State Fullerton, 73–62, on Saturday night at Titan Gym.

Jess Lawson led all scorers with 24 points on 7-for-11 shooting, adding seven rebounds and three assists in another efficient two-way performance. Carly Heidger followed with 15 points and three triples, while Andjela Matic added 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from deep. Maya Hernandez posted 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds to round out four Lions in double figures.

The win came alongside several season-best marks: LMU set new highs in points (73) and steals (17), while tying season records for field goals made (24) and three-pointers made (6).

Fullerton opened the night with a quick 5–0 burst, but LMU settled in behind back-to-back baskets from Hernandez and Lawson. The opening quarter featured seven ties and three lead changes before the Lions seized control late. With the game tied 11–11, Hernandez muscled in a go-ahead finish, and Heidger delivered the swing of the period, scoring five straight points in the final 22 seconds with a driving layup and a deep three — sending LMU into the break up 21–18. The Lions shot 52.9 percent in the quarter with six assists on nine made field goals.

LMU pushed its lead early in the second, stretching the margin to 25–21 behind four consecutive points from Hernandez. Fullerton responded with a 4–0 burst of its own, but the Lions countered immediately as Matic knocked down a pull-up jumper and Lawson added two free throws. A late Matic three capped an 18–13 period and sent LMU into halftime ahead 39–31.

The Lions extended their advantage to double digits early in the third behind strong half-court execution and another Matic triple. Fullerton trimmed the margin to seven midway through the quarter, but Lawson steadied LMU with a pull-up jumper and Heidger buried a transition three to halt the Titans' momentum. The Lions closed the period hitting five of eight from the line to carry a 54–46 lead into the fourth.

LMU closed the night with composure, outscoring the Titans 19–16 in the final period. Lawson took command late, scoring six points at the line — including four in the final 24 seconds — to seal the win. Hernandez added a paint finish and two early free throws, while LMU's defense clamped down when it mattered most. The Lions allowed just one Fullerton field goal over the final 2:15 and closed the night with multiple defensive stops and clutch rebounds to secure the win.

LMU returns home to face Utah State on Friday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. in Gersten Pavilion.
