Lions Break Open Game in Second Half, Remain Unbeaten Behind Vide’s Career-High

LOS ANGELES – LMU men's basketball earned their fifth win in as many games on Friday night, knocking off previously unbeaten Troy in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Jan Vide led all scorers with a career-high 24 points in the 74-63 win.

Rodney Brown Jr. opened the scoring with an opening-possession three and extended the lead to 7-2 with a bucket less than three minutes into play. Brown scored 17 in the game and knocked down three triples.

A 7-0 Troy run gave the visitors their first lead of the game. They turned that into a 12-5 extended run to lead 19-13 with 10:59 to play in the first. LMU responded with a 12-2 run of their own to take a four-point lead with 2:55 to play in the half. Jalen Shelley hit a three to start the scoring and Vide followed with back-to-back runners in the 7-0 stretch of the run.

The Lions took a 27-25 lead into the half. LMU forced 14 first half turnovers and held Troy to just one field goal over the last 10-plus minutes before intermission.

The second half opened with four lead changes in less than two minutes. Troy took their final lead of the game at the 15:34 mark before the Lions rattled off nine unanswered points sparked by a Vide three-point play. Myron Amey, Jr. and Shelley followed with back-to-back threes to extend the lead to 46-38 less than a minute after the Lions trailed. Amey scored 11 and Shelley added 10.

The first double-digit lead came at 11:44 in the second half when AJ Thomas found Rokas Jocius for an open layup and then followed with a steal and coast-to-coast layup to push the Lions up 11 in front of the home crowd.

Troy, an NCAA Tournament team from a season ago, did not give in and went on a 9-0 run of their own to pull within two. Jocius hit a layup to stop the run then Brown hit consecutive jumpers to bring the lead right back up to eight. Following a Trojans free throw, Vide knocked down a triple to hit the 20-point mark and bring the score back up to 10.

Amey scored reached double digits with late baskets down the stretch to get the lead back up to 10 each time. Shelley punched a dunk in for the exclamation point in the final minute to give LMU the 11-point win.

Aaron McBride led the team with seven rebounds and Vide also finished with a game-high five rebounds.

LMU outscored Troy 40-24 in paint points, despite the Trojans doubling up the Lions in free throw attempts. LMU's 10 steals were also the most against a Division I opponent this season. Amey's three steals are an individual high for any player this season.

Vide is the fourth different player this season to record a 20-point game for the Lions. Vide finished 10-for-18 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the line.

This is LMU's best start since the 2018-19 campaign when the Lions started 8-0 en route to a 22-win season.

The Lions hit the road next to plat at UC Santa Barbara on Monday night before heading out to the Sunshine Slam just before Thanksgiving.
