LOS ANGELES – The Lions fought hard but couldn't slow down the San Diego Toreros, dropping Saturday's match 3-0 in Gersten Pavilion.

USD came out strong, jumping to an early lead with seven straight points to go up 10-2. An error from the Toreros and a kill by Maddie Boerstra got the Lions into double digits and within five, but USD stayed hot, putting together another four-point run to stretch the lead to nine. The Toreros took set one, 25-15.

LMU bounced back to start set two, going on a 3-0 run capped by a Sophie Stephenson kill to grab a quick lead. USD responded with five in a row, forcing an LMU timeout. The Lions came out swinging, hitting back-to-back kills from Nicole Schuetz and Stephenson, making it 8-7. USD found its rhythm again late, scoring six straight to go up 20-11. The Toreros kept the momentum and closed out set two, 25-15.

Set three was a battle early, with neither team leading by more than two points until USD went on a short run to take an 11-7 lead. LMU answered right back with three straight, finished off by a Sophia Keene kill. The Lions found a spark midway through and even took a 16-15 lead, but USD regrouped, tied it up, and pulled away with a four-point run down the stretch. The Toreros sealed the win, taking the final set 25-20 and the match 3-0.

Boerstra led the Lions in kills with 10 while Cecily Bramschreiber led both teams with 13 digs.

The Lions hit the road on Thursday, Nov. 6, to face the Portland Pilots in Portland, OR.
