PORTLAND, OR – The Lions came up short Thursday night, falling 3-0 to the Portland Pilots.

Portland started off on a hot streak, going on a 9-1 run before LMU called a timeout. A block from Sophie Stephenson cut the gap to five, but the Pilots responded with another run to make it 15-6. A kill from Maddie Boerstra and an ace from Cecily Bramschreiber helped get the Lions into double digits, but the deficit was too big to overcome as Portland took the first set, 25-13.

The second set was much closer. LMU opened with three straight points, including back-to-back aces from Bramschreiber. The teams traded points, tying the score six different times before Portland managed to pull ahead. A kill from Nicole Schuetz brought LMU within two late, 20-18, but the Pilots closed it out, 25-21.

The Lions looked strong to start the third, jumping out to a 6-2 lead and extending it to six after a couple of kills from Boerstra. But Portland flipped the momentum, going on a seven-point run to take a 23-20 lead. LMU kept fighting, highlighted by a block from Camille Pomeroy and Delfina Schuh to make it 24-22, but the Pilots hung on to win the set and the match.

The Lions are back in action Sunday, Nov. 9, when they take on Oregon State in Corvallis.
