Lions Battle to Five Sets Against Waves

MALIBU, CA - It was a back-and-forth battle in Firestone Fieldhouse as the Lions pushed Pepperdine to five sets before the Waves ultimately pulled away for the, 3-2, win.

Set one started tight, with LMU grabbing the first two points off a PEP error and a kill from Nicole Schuetz. The Waves answered quickly, going on a 7-1 run that forced an LMU timeout. PEP kept rolling, adding another four straight to go up 14-6. The Lions fought back with a 5-0 run capped by a Maddie Boerstra kill to close the gap, but PEP held on and took the first set, 25-18.

Set two played out much like the first, before LMU grabbed a small lead after a Sophie Stephenson kill from Delfina Schuh made it 8-5. The Waves tied it up a few times and then took control midway through with a 5-0 run to go up 18-12. The Lions picked up a few late points, but PEP closed it out to go up 2-0.

The Lions showed some fight in set three, jumping ahead 7-4. Both teams traded points until LMU went up 18-15 after a big block from Camille Pomeroy and Schuetz. Things got wild down the stretch when PEP tied it at 21, then took the lead at 23-22. LMU responded with three straight to steal the set, 25-23.

Riding that momentum, LMU came out strong again in set four, leading 6-3 early. The Waves tied it up and eventually took the lead after scoring four in a row, 16-14. But the Lions stayed locked in, tying it again on a Stephenson kill. From there, it was the wildest set of the night with LMU grinding out a clutch extra-points win to force a decisive fifth.

Unfortunately, set five didn't go the Lions way. PEP came out firing, taking the first four points and never letting up. LMU battled but couldn't catch up, as the Waves took the final set 15-6 and the match, 3-2.

Boerstra led all players with 21 kills, Schuetz racked up 10 blocks, and Schuh tallied a match-high 21 digs.

The Lions are back in action Saturday, Nov. 1, against the San Diego Toreros in Gersten Pavilion.
