Lions Extend Winning Streak With Victory Over Saint Mary’s

MORAGA, CA—On Saturday afternoon, the Lions defeated the Saint Mary's Gaels, 3-1, extending their winning streak to four.

In set one, LMU started strong with key kills from Sophia Meyers and Paige Flickinger, aided by solid assists from Mia Schafer. Service errors from both teams allowed for brief back-and-forth momentum shifts, but the Lions capitalized on a service ace by Jiana Lawson, extending their lead to 7-2. Saint Mary's called a timeout, hoping to regroup. However, LMU continued to dominate with a kill from Olivia Toland. Saint Mary's tied the set at 13-13, but LMU regained control with Lawson's kill and service ace. Despite a late run by Saint Mary's, a kill by Leah Burrell started a three-point flurry that ended with a block assist from Toland and Lawson. The Lions won set one, 25-21.

The Lions opened set two with a kill from Lawson. The Gaels quickly gained control after scoring three consecutive points, 5-2. Saint Mary's held onto the lead until LMU had a four-point rally and took the lead, 11-10. Both teams exchanged leads multiple times, but service errors plagued both sides. Towards the end of the set, the Gaels scored six points in a and ultimately won 25-23.

LMU took an early lead in set three when a kill by Kalani Hayes sparked a run putting the Lions up, 7-5. The set continued with back-and-forth action until midway, when Saint Mary's took a five-point lead,18-13, forcing an LMU timeout. The Lions regrouped and stormed back with an eight-point run, reclaiming the lead at 21-18. The set ended decisively with three consecutive kills—one from Burrell and two from Meyers—securing a 25-20 win for LMU.

Set four was a tight battle, with neither team leading by more than three points. Midway through, Saint Mary's held a four-point advantage, but LMU responded with a 4-0 run, tying it at 17-17. The score tied five more times before the Lions broke through with two straight points, clinching the set 26-24 and winning the match 3-1.

Paige Flickinger topped both teams with 17 kills, while Sam Hastings led the match with 17 digs. Delfina Schuh and Schafer shared the lead in assists, each recording 26.
