SANTA CLARA, CA – The Lions extend their winning streak with a 3-1 victory over the Santa Clara Broncos on Thursday night.
Santa Clara jumped out early in set one, but LMU quickly tied things thanks to a kill from
Kalani Hayes. The Lions took the lead when another kill from Hayes sparked a 4-0 run that ended with a kill from
Leah Burrell, putting them up two, 8-6. LMU held the lead until the Broncos scored four consecutive points, taking the lead 15-14. Both teams traded points down the stretch, with Santa Clara pulling away after two clutch service aces. The Broncos would take set one, 25-22.
The Lions trailed the Broncos for the majority of set two. It wasn't until a service error from Sant Clara started a seven-point flurry for LMU, with four kills from
Paige Flickinger, giving the Lions their first lead of the set, 22-18. The Broncos were able to level the score at 22-22, but it would be the Lions who would win set two, 25-23.
In the third set, LMU came out strong, scoring four straight points and building their largest match lead at 10-4. A block by
Jiana Lawson and Burrell fueled another run, extending the lead to 14-5. The Lions dominated by 11 points at 22-1 and cruised to a 25-14 win.
LMU kept the momentum in the fourth set, opening with five straight points. Santa Clara fought back but never closed the gap. A kill from Hayes, assisted by
Delfina Schuh, sparked another LMU run, and despite a late push from the Broncos, a
Marlee Arrington kill sealed the 25-16 set win and a 3-1 match victory for the Lions.
The Lions finished with a great hitting percentage of .299 and 13 blocks compared to the Broncos six blocks.
Flickinger led LMU with 15 kills, tying a Broncos player for the game high. Behind her was
Sophia Meyers, who had 14 kills and just one error, hitting an impressive .433.
Sam Hastings led all players with 18 digs, while Lawson dominated at the net, recording nine blocks.
The Lions will next face the San Francisco Dons on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. in San Francisco, CA.
