Lions Defeat Tigers in Conference Home Opener

LOS ANGELES – The Lions secured a 3-1 victory over the Pacific Tigers on Thursday night in their conference home opener.

The Tigers took an early 7-4 lead over the Lions in the first set. Pacific maintained their advantage until a service error sparked a five-point run for LMU, capped by a block assist from Kaitlyn Evans and Leah Burrell, giving the Lions a 16-14 lead. A kill by Jiana Lawson, set up by Mia Schafer, brought LMU within five points of securing the set. The Lions closed the set with the final four points, winning 25-20.

The beginning of set two was tight, with the deficit being no more than three points. Midway into the set, the Tigers took the lead after a 4-0 run, leading by one 11-10. They extended their lead by five after an LMU attack error. The Lions scored a few points here and there, but the Tigers took set two, 25-19.

Set three opened with LMU taking a quick 2-0 lead after a block by Lawson and Sophia Meyers, followed by a kill from Meyers. The teams traded points with errors from both sides before Pacific pulled ahead, 9-7. The Tigers momentum continued and extended their lead to 11-7. A few plays later, the Lions scored four consecutive points and leveled the score, 12-12. LMU had another run late in the game, scoring six in a row with three kills from Kalani Hayes, Meyers, and Burrell, putting the Lions up 23-17. The Lions would win set three, 25-20, and led the match 2-1.

Pacific took an early 7-4 lead in set four, but LMU quickly responded, with a kill from Burrell starting a three-point run that tied the score at 10-10. Two attack errors from Pacific, along with consecutive kills from Olivia Toland and Paige Flickinger, pushed the Lions ahead 16-13. The Tigers fought to close the gap, pulling within one at 21-20, but LMU finished strong, scoring four straight points. A decisive block assist by Lawson and Burrell sealed the set 25-20, securing a 3-1 match victory for the Lions.

The Lions next match is Saturday, Sept 28, against the Saint Mary's Gaels in Moraga, CA.
