LOS ANGELES – Devan Ornelas notched a pair of hits and an RBI in LMU's 4-1 loss to UCLA on Tuesday night at Page Stadium.
The Lions gave the start to graduate transfer Jeff Heinrich after the top two options to start were unavailable on Tuesday. He gave the Lions two strong innings before passing the baton to
Jake Geis.
Geis struck out the side in the third inning before running into some trouble in the fourth. He allowed two earned runs and was tagged with the loss.
Ryan Mullan got out of a jam in the fourth with minimal damage and punched out a pair in a scoreless outing.
Jacob Hughes took the mound next and punched out a pair but surrendered a run as the Bruins built a 3-0 lead.
The Lions answered in the bottom of the sixth with a run of their own. Benny Casillas reached on an infield single to second base with one out. It was his 22
nd consecutive game reaching base. He stole second and came into score on a two-out single that Ornelas lined into center field.
Michael Nunez followed suit with a scoreless seventh before Kolby Schiffer returned to the mound in the eighth. He was charged with a run after a walk led to a run. Cole Chimenti finished the inning with a strikeout.
Gabe Maya took over in the top of the ninth defending a three run deficit. He faced one batter before turning it over to
Colin Caycedo who notched the final three outs for the LMU defense.
The Lions went down in order in the bottom half.
Ornelas finished with a pair of hits and the lone RBI of the game.
LMU travels to San Diego to face the Toreros in the coming weekend, with a 6:05 p.m. (PT) start on Friday, 5:05 p.m. on Saturday and 1:05 p.m. start on Sunday.
