Ayers, Biller Lead Lions to Season Sweep of Bulldogs

LOS ANGELES – Robbie Ayers homered and doubled in another run, Sam Biller collected three hits and the Lions scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the season sweep over the visiting Fresno State Bulldogs on Tuesday night at Page Stadium.

The Lions got a huge boost from Ayers. The catcher has had a fairly pedestrian season, but lit up the Westchester night on Tuesday. He blasted his third homerun of the season in the fifth inning and notched an RBI double in the eighth.

When asked after the game which one felt better Ayers said, "It had to be the double. I have been working on hitting the ball like that all week."

The Lions got a phenomenal start on the mound from Seamus Barrett. Making his 20th appearance of the season, the big man struck out four Bulldogs, allowed just the one leadoff homerun and went three strong innings.

He handed the ball off to NCAA appearance leader Austin Schroeder who retired six of the seven batters he faced.

Jake Geis and Michael Nunez combined for the sixth and seventh innings before Ryan Mullan came in and retired the final six batters of the game.

The eighth inning was a sight to behold for Lions fans.

When all was said and done, 14 batters came to the plate in the inning. The Lions hit three straight doubles to open the inning, Devan Ornelas avoided a tag at home plate with a nifty juke move, Ayers smacked another double and Biller, Benny Casillas and Diego Baqueiro all notched RBI singles.

The Lions head through the Grapevine to face Pacific in Stockton in a three-game set starting on Friday, April 19.
