SANTA CLARA, Calif. – LMU women's water polo never trailed in the Golden Coast Conference opener on Saturday afternoon, defeating Santa Clara, 21-8.
The Lions jumped ahead 3-0 after
Ruth Arino Ruiz scored twice and
Carolina Magano added one. After the Broncos got on the board,
Skye Nankervis scored her first of the day and Arino Ruiz added a penalty shot goal. Santa Clara added one back before
Yanah Gerber closed the period with two goals in a row to bring the lead to 7-2.
LMU blanked Santa Clara, 8-0, in the second quarter to push the lead to 15-2 at intermission. The second period goals were scored by Nankervis twice,
Mikayla Lopez twice,
Lior Ben David,
Kawehi Kauahi,
Taylor Enright, and
Sophie Kadifa.
The lead grew to 17-2 as Nankervis and
Noa Sasover started the third with goals within the first three minutes of play. The Broncos closed the quarter with the final four goals to bring the score to 17-6.
The Broncos pulled within 10 with the first goal of the fourth quarter before
Julia Erwin converted a powerplay and Enright scored consecutive goals. After Santa Clara scored with just over two minutes to play, Magano closed the game with a final minute goal.
Madison Davis made the start and recorded five saves in the first 16 minutes of play.
Inbar Geva recorded a save and a steal when she took over in the cage for the second half.
LMU will remain on the road for a Sunday game at Pacific for the second conference game of the season. That game will begin at 11:00 AM in Stockton.
