LOS ANGELES – Brendan Bobo had a clutch two-run single in the bottom of the eighth to give the Lions the edge in a 5-4 come-from-behind victory against Pepperdine on Thursday night at Page Stadium. Â
Â
The Waves scored three before the Lions could scratch a run across.Â
Â
Christian Dicochea notched the first hit of the game in the fourth inning for the Lions and ended up coming around to score with a couple good team at bats. Daalen Adderley walked before Dicochea advanced to third on a fly ball to deep center. Robbie Ayers would chop a single to the left side of the infield to get LMU on the board. Â
Â
The Waves would fight right back and answer with another run in the top of the fifth. Â
Â
That would be the end of the night for Thursday's starter Owen Hackman. He gritted through five innings, allowing four runs on six hits and struck out five. Â
Â
Cole Stucky came on for relief in the sixth and notched a pair of strikeouts and got five outs before exiting.Â
Â
In the bottom of the sixth, the Lions pulled one run closer. Devan Ornelas led off the inning with a four-pitch walk. He advanced to second on a single by Dicochea and third on a fielder's choice.
Andrew Grenert would collect his first collegiate RBI with a sacrifice fly to deep right field. Â
Â
Seamus Barrett came on in relief of Stucky with two outs in the seventh and got a chopper to third baseman
Diego Baqueiro. Baqueiro stayed back and fired to first for a very close out that withstood a replay challenge by Pepperdine. Â
Â
The game changed in the eighth. Â
Â
With LMU relievers throwing up zeroes, the offense picked up their defense with three runs to take the lead. Adderley laced a single into left field with one out before advancing to second on a well-worked full count walk from Grenert.
Grant Weiss came in to pinch hit and ripped a breaking ball off the blue monster and Adderley scored easily. Weiss was lifted for pinch runner
Connor Blough with Bobo at the plate. Bobo came into the night tied for fourth in the conference in RBI and roped a single past a diving Waves first baseman. Both Grenert and Blough scored easily and the Lions had their first lead of the night.Â
Â
Jeff Heinrich worked a perfect ninth for his third save in four chances and the Lions earned their first conference victory in four tries.Â
Â
The Lions will be back in action on Friday night against Pepperdine with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. (PT). The series will now conclude on Monday, April 1 because of inclement weather on Saturday. First pitch in the finale is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.Â
