Lions Fall to Waves in Tight Ballgame

LOS ANGELES – The Lions baseball team fell to Pepperdine 4-3 on Friday night at Page Stadium.

Left-handed starter Ryan Towers gave up a leadoff homerun, but settled in to throw 5.1 effective innings before turning the ball over to the bullpen. He allowed only the one run and struck out five.

LMU immediately answered with one run in the bottom of the first to negate the homer. Sam Biller walked and stole second with one out in the inning. With two outs, Diego Baqueiro lined a single into left field that scored Biller easily to tie up the game.

The Lions got two more in the bottom of the second inning. Christian Dicochea led off the inning with a single into center. Grant Weiss followed up with a hit by pitch and Andrew Grenert walked to load the bases. Robbie Ayers stepped up and roped a single through the left side. Dicochea scored easily and when the left fielder bobbled, Weiss came into score as well.

That was all the offense for awhile, as Pepperdine eventually tied the game in the seventh and pushed one across in the ninth.

Connor Blough led off the bottom of the ninth with a double down the right field line, but the Lions were unable to push him across.

Grenert notched his first career hit with a single to left-center field in the bottom of the seventh. In his first three games, Grenert has walked five times and scored three runs.

The Lions will finish up the series with Pepperdine on Monday with first pitch scheduled at 4:05 p.m. (PT) due to the inclement weather planned for the weekend.
