Game Recap: Baseball |

Rally Comes Up Inches Short

LOS ANGELES – Diego Baqueiro had five RBIs and was inches away from delivering a game-tying double in the bottom of the 11th inning as the tying run was tagged out at the plate. UC Irvine prevailed 10-9 at Page Stadium on Tuesday night in a marathon of a game.

The Anteaters went ahead early and it seemed like the Lions spent the whole game trying to catch up.

Baqueiro drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly. Sam Biller and Benny Casillas had back-to-back singles in the first before Biller stole third. After a review that confirmed the safe call, Baqueiro hit a fly ball to center field to plate the first run of the game.

Biller drove in the second run. Brett Zimmerman led off the inning with a walk and Christian Dicochea was hit by a pitch that moved Zimmerman to second. Both runners advanced on a ground out before Biller smacked a ball into right to score the second run.

The Anteaters got one in the fifth to extend the lead, but the Lions battled back with some gritty at-bats in the eighth to tie things up.

Pinch hitter Grant Weiss led off the inning with a hit by pitch. He advanced to second on a passed ball and then scored when Christian Dicochea lined a two-out single into right field. Dicochea advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt and then was lifted for pinch runner Trey Becker. After Brendan Bobo walked, Biller hit a tough ground ball up the middle for a single, but the second baseman made a nice diving stop to save a run. Casillas followed up with a hard grounder that ate up the first baseman to tie the game.

The game would remain tied until the Anteaters scored three in the tenth.

LMU came right back with three of their own.

Andrew Grenert made his collegiate debut with a pair of walks, the first of which started a three-run rally in the tenth inning. Bobo followed the walk with a shot to center for a single with Grenert advancing to third. Bobo advanced to second before Biller walked to load the bases. Casillas walked to force in the first run of the inning and bring the Lions within a pair. Baqueiro then stepped up and lined a single into left-center field to score two and put the winning run on third. Casillas would be forced out at the plate to keep the game squared.

Once again, the Anteaters scored three runs in the eleventh inning.

This time, LMU could only muster two.

Grenert once again worked a walk on a tough at-bat. Bobo was hit by a pitch before Biller walked to load the bases. After Casillas struck out, Baqueiro hit a high drive off the blue monster in left field. Bobo and Grenert scored easily but Biller was tagged out at the plate to end the game.

The Lions used 12 pitchers on the night with the Anteaters using 11.

LMU hosts Pepperdine in the second West Coast Conference weekend on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. First pitch for Thursday is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. (PT).
