LOS ANGELES – Daalen Adderley homered, Owen Hackman battled through five innings and the Lions took the first game of the series with Villanova 7-1 at Page Stadium.Â
Â
Hackman gritted through five innings, allowing only one run, but working out of numerous jams. The senior right-hander was sitting in the mid 90s with the fastball and the secondary offerings were working, his command was just a little off. He walked five, but only allowed one hit. He struck out nine batters, including back-to-back strikeouts in the first with runners on second and third to eliminate the threat.Â
Â
In addition to Hackman, the Lions relievers were working for the second straight game. Michael Nunez pitched a perfect sixth and turned the ball over to Ryan Baker who got four outs. Baker turned it over to Ryan Mullan who punched out a pair before freshman
Colin Caycedo notched his first collegiate strikeout and first collegiate double play to end the game. Â
Â
Adderley got the Lions on the board with two outs in the second with a blast to left-center field. He took his time around the bases for his second round tripper of the season. Â
Â
Villanova got their lone run of the game in the top of the third to tie the game, but it was all Lions from then on.Â
Â
The Lions got two in the third inning. Benny Casillas led off the inning with a single up the middle before stealing second. After a quick review, the call was confirmed. Joe Reid followed up with a single to move Casillas to third.
Sam Biller followed with a single of his own to take the lead. After a
Diego Baqueiro walk to load the bases,
Christian Dicochea reached on a throwing error from the shortstop and the Lions added one more. Â
Â
Biller opened the fifth inning with a single to center and stole second to put himself into scoring position. Baqueiro lined a single just out of reach of the second baseman to push Biller to third and then advanced to second when the throw came into the plate. Dicochea would dump a single into right field in the ensuing at bat to drive in both runners. Dicochea advanced to second on a groundout before coming around to score on a
Grant Weiss single. The play at the plate was close, but the diminutive second baseman evaded the tag.Â
Â
The final tally of the evening came in the eighth. Casillas opened the inning with a hustle double, diving into second base just ahead of the tag. After a Reid single advanced him to third, Biller hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Casillas to score easily.Â
Â
The Lions and Wildcats continue the series on Saturday, March 2, with the first pitch scheduled for 4:05 p.m. (PT). Â
