LOS ANGELES – Ryan Towers threw six scoreless innings, Diego Baqueiro had a clutch double and the Lions clinched a series victory over the Villanova Wildcats with a 6-2 victory on a drizzly Saturday evening at Page Stadium. Â
Â
Towers made his third start of the season on Saturday and after two outings of less than four innings, the junior left-hander did not allow a hit through his first five innings. He worked around a one-out walk in the first inning before retiring 14 in a row including the first five all by strikeout. A leadoff single in the sixth ended that run, but Towers got his final strikeout and a pair of flyouts to end the inning. He struck out a career high ten batters, in a career high six innings of work, walked only one and allowed one hit, a single. Â
Â
Â
The Lions once again got off to an early lead. Sam Biller continued to find ways on base, working a four-pitch walk before advancing to second on a
Brendan Bobo single right up the chute. The pair combined for a double steal before Biller scored on a Baqueiro groundout. Â
Â
The Lions batted around in the fifth inning and plated four runs while doing so. Connor Blough, in his first start of the season, laced a single to right field with one out. He advanced to second when
Christian Dicochea was hit by a pitch. The Lions successfully executed their second double steal of the game, advancing both runners. Biller walked to load the bases and Bobo walked to move the carousel along, scoring Blough from third. Baqueiro laced a double over the left fielder's head to score two more. The Lions got one more in the inning as
Benny Casillas hit a chopper up the middle and the opposing shortstop was unable to handle the ball. Â
Â
Casillas would notch another RBI in the seventh inning. Baqueiro singled through the left side of the infield with one out before
Daalen Adderley went the other way, singling through the right side.
Joe Reid singled for the Lions third in a row before Casillas grounded out to third base to plate Baqueiro. Â
Â
OTHER NOTESÂ
Blough notched two hits in his first start of the season. Â
Â
Baqueiro notched three RBI and Casillas added two more of his own. Â
