Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Women’s Water Polo Impresses to Open Tina Finale Tournament

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – For the first time since 2018, LMU women's water polo allowed just two goals in a game. That's the way that the Lions started the 2024 Tina Finale Tournament with a 21-2 win over Redlands. The Lions followed that win with a 15-8 win over Cal State Northridge.

Game 1: LMU 21, Redlands 2

The Lions scored five goals in the first quarter and six goals in the second quarter all without allowing Redlands to score in the opening half. LMU added 5-to-1 score lines in both the third and fourth quarters to take the game, 21-2. Sadie Riester led the way with four goals. Both Lily Larson and Sophia DeMattia added three goals apiece. Julia Erwin, London Boyd, Carolina Magano, and Carla Magano all scored two goals, with Kawehi Kauahi accounting for the remaining goal. The Lions shot 75 percent (21-for-28) and held Redlands to 63 percent (2-for-32). All goals came at even strength, with neither team scoring on the powerplay.

Talia Herbermann played all 32 minutes in the cage for the Lions, saving over 85 percent of the shots she faced, and finishing with a career-best 12 total saves.

Game 2: LMU 15, CSUN 8

LMU scored eight times in the first quarter and never looked back. Ruth Arino Ruiz opened the game with her first of seven goals to give LMU a quick lead. Lior Ben David, Carolina Magano, Skye Nankervis, and Yanah Gerber each scored in the first quarter to add Arino Ruiz's first-period hat trick.

Arino Ruiz picked right up to open the second quarter, and Skye Nankervis and Anna Tarantino followed to increase the LMU lead to 11-2. CSUN scored with 1:02 to play before halftime to make it an 11-3 game at the break.

Noa Sasover started the second half with a goal. The Matadors closed the quarter with three of the final four goals, with Gerber scoring during that stretch for the Lions.

Arino Ruiz scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to build LMU's lead back up to 15-6. CSUN scored a pair of goals over the final 1:32 before time expired.

Madison Davis made 11 saves for the Lions in the cage.
