LOS ANGELES – Khadim Diaw and Brendan Bobo each hit first inning homeruns, Blake Reilly threw three solid innings, and the LMU baseball team broke a five-game losing streak to USC on Wednesday night with a 5-3 victory at Page Stadium.Â
Â
Reilly set the tone in the first by punching out preseason All-American Austin Overn to lead off the game. He got a pair of groundouts to get the Lions into the dugout. Â
Â
Diaw got the fireworks started with a towering blast over the blue monster. Diaw, the reigning WCC Freshman of the Year, hit a walkoff homerun in the first midweek game of the season last year against Long Beach State and leads off the first midweek game of the year with a home run this season. Â
Â
After Robbie Ayers singled with two outs, Bobo launched an opposite-field homerun for his second of the season. The Cal State Fullerton transfer has provided significant pop and clutch hits over his first four games in the Lions uniform. Â
Â
Reilly continued to mow down Trojans, throwing three complete innings and striking out three. Â
Â
Diaw continued to be a menace, singling on a perfect push bunt in his second plate appearance. He pushed it past the pitcher and easily beat out a throw from the second baseman. He advanced to second on a close fielder's choice, as he was running on the pitch. He would eventually score on a wild pitch.Â
Â
The Trojans would put up three unanswered to come within one run of the Lions, but LMU would push across an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly from
Robbie Ayers.
Daalen Adderley led off the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a
Diego Baqueiro walk. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Ayers drove a ball to center. Â
Â
Jeff Heinrich came in for the ninth and shut down the Trojans to record his first save in a Lions uniform. Â
Â
LMU heads to the Tony Gwynn Invitational this weekend to face Utah, Cal State Bakersfield and UC San Diego. Cal State Bakersfield and Utah will be on Friday and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. (PT) at San Diego State, and UC San Diego will be Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in a true road game.Â
