SPOKANE, WA – The Lions came up short against the No.19 ranked team in the nation, the Gonzaga Bulldogs, with a final score of 71-47 on Saturday afternoon.
Soufia Inoussa was the leading scorer for the Lions, contributing 10 points and four rebounds. Following closely was
Nicole Rodriguez, who added nine points to the team's effort.
Amaya Oliver and
Cynthia Ezeja also made notable contributions, each chipping in with seven points.
The games started with the Bulldogs securing the initial six points, but LMU responded with scoring from
Sydney Gandy and Ezeja. Despite the Lions commendable defensive efforts, containing the Bulldogs in three-point attempts was challenging. Gonzaga managed a 4-7 record from beyond the arc, concluding the quarter with a successful three-pointer and taking the lead at 15-6.
Starting the second quarter, Gonzaga secured a 15-point lead with the first six points, establishing a score of 21-6. The Bulldogs achieved an impressive 76.9% accuracy from the field and a 75% success rate from the three-point line throughout the quarter. Meanwhile, the Lions struggled managing only 16 points in the first half to the Bulldogs 38.
Even though they were behind, the Lions brought a burst of energy to the third quarter. At 7:11, they had a brief run, accumulating five consecutive points, kickstarted by
Noelle Yancy's aggressive play that drew a foul. The Bulldogs managed to score the final two points of the quarter, resulting in a quarter score of 49-22.
The Lions never gave up, even in the fourth quarter. Inoussa and Rodriguez led LMU to score 20 points during the quarter, showcasing an impressive 60% accuracy from three-point land. Unfortunately, the deficit was too big from the first half for the Lions to catch up to the Bulldogs, resulting in a 71-47 final score.
Looking ahead, the Lions next game is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 17, against the San Diego Toreros at 2 PM in San Diego, CA.
