Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

LMU Defeats Gauchos in Finals Seconds on Porter And-1

LOS ANGELES – For the second game in a row, LMU men's basketball won with late game heroics. On Saturday, it was Will Johnston hitting a layup to beat the buzzer, and this time it was Jevon Porter hitting a go-ahead and-1 to push the Lions ahead of UC Santa Barbara, 60-58.

The game started slowly for LMU, as UCSB jumped ahead 15-3 through the fist 6:55 of the game. Caleb Stone-Carrawell scored the first five points in an 8-0 run and Myron Amey, Jr. capped it with a three to bring the score to 15-11 over the next two minutes.

Stone-Carrawell scored all of his game-high 15 points in the first half, including tying the game at 19-19 and 21-21 with a pair of made shots.

A 6-0 LMU run gave the Lions their first lead as Amey hit a pair of layups to bookend the run as part of his nine-point night.

The Lions held a three-point lead twice over the final 1:08 of the half, including just Alex Merkviladze's layup that pushed the score to 33-30 heading into intermission.

The Gauchos flipped their three-point deficit into an eight-point advantage with the first 11 points after halftime.

Will Johnston stopped the run and put the Lions on the board in the second half with a top of the arc three and Amey followed with a layup to make it a one-possession game.

UCSB held their lead until Jevon Porter hit a go-ahead three with 8:05 on the clock to push the Lions ahead by two with 8:06 remaining.

After the Gauchos tied the game for a final time, LMU's guards of Johnston and Jan Vide hit back-to-back shots to push the Lions ahead by two possessions with 5:50 on the clock. Vide went 4-for-4 in the second half for all eight of his points.

Kenny Pohto hit two layups in less than a minute to push the Gauchos back ahead by a point entering the final four minutes.

The score remained the same until Rick Issanza beat the shot clock buzzer with a go-ahead bank shot with 2:02 to play.

Pohto again put the Gauchos agead with a late tip-in in the final 47 seconds for the game's eighth of nine lead changes before Porter's game-winner secured the win.

The Lions held UCSB's bench to just eight points and scored 21 of their own, matching a season-high mark against Division I opponents this year.

UCSB's 58 points scored is the fewest by a Division I opponent against the Lions this season.

LMU will look to build on this homestand on Friday night against Southern University. The game will tip off at 7:00 PM and air on ESPN+.
