LAS VEGAS – The Lions put up a strong effort in their season opener but fell to last season's Mountain West champions, the UNLV Lady Rebels, with a final score of 73-57 on Monday night.
Brandi Williams led LMU with 14 points, while
Maya Hernandez added 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.
The Lady Rebels struck first, but the Lions answered back with a smooth layup from
Zawadi Ogot, keeping the game close. After a couple of ties, UNLV surged ahead with a 6-0 run to close the first quarter up 14-8.
Williams kept LMU competitive in the second quarter, scoring the Lions' first nine points and giving them their first lead at 17-16. Although UNLV held the lead through most of the quarter, the Lions stayed close and went into halftime trailing by just five, 34-29.
UNLV came out strong after halftime with a quick five-point run, yet a layup by Hernandez brought LMU back within five points. This spark was quickly met with a 10-0 run by the Lady Rebels, extending their lead to 51-36 at the end of the third.
The Lions continued to battle in the fourth quarter, as
Naudia Evans put on an impressive display, scoring nine points on 3-for-5 shooting, including 2-for-2 from three-point range. The Lady Rebels maintained control and claimed the victory with a final score of 73-57.
The Lions next game is on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m., where they'll face Bethesda at Gersten Pavilion.
