LOS ANGELES – The Lions defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Senior Day, securing a 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon to improve to 14-2 in conference play.
LMU started strong, scoring five consecutive points to take an early 6-3 lead. Both teams exchanged points, but a kill by
Marlee Arrington sparked a dominant seven-point rally, extending the Lions' lead to 19-9. The Lions closed the set with three straight points, capped by back-to-back kills from
Jiana Lawson and
Sophie Stephenson, winning 25-12.
The second set was tightly contested, with neither team leading by more than a point early on. A 3-0 run gave Gonzaga a slight 14-12 edge, but LMU responded with a four-point surge, aided by Bulldog errors, to go up 16-14. The teams traded ties until three errors by the Lions allowed Gonzaga to take a 21-19 lead. The Bulldogs capitalized to claim the set, 25-21.
Paige Flickinger opened the third set with a kill that set the tone for a four-point LMU run, giving the Lions a 6-2 advantage. Gonzaga narrowed the gap with a kill and a service ace, but LMU answered with a four-point streak, highlighted by a Schuh ace, to lead 15-9. The Bulldogs chipped away but couldn't close the deficit, as LMU won the set, 25-19.
LMU controlled the final set from the start, with a four-point run punctuated by a block from Lawson and Stephenson to make it 11-6. Another four-point burst later extended the lead to 15-8. Although Gonzaga mounted a late 4-0 run, it wasn't enough to stop the Lions, who sealed the match with a 25-17 set win.
Flickinger led the Lions with 15 kills, while Lawson contributed six blocks and a .500 hitting percentage.
Mia Schafer tallied a team-high 20 assists, closely followed by
Delfina Schuh with 19, while
Sam Hastings led all players defensively with 18 digs.
The Lions return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 27, hosting the Oregon State Beavers at Gersten Pavilion.
