Lions Battle Hard but Fall to Pacific

STOCKTON, CA The Lions fell to the Pacific Tigers in a hard-fought 3-2 match on Thursday night. The loss marked LMU's first defeat since Oct. 5 but did not shake their hold on first place in the conference.

LMU started strong in the opening set, quickly taking a 3-1 lead. A kill by Paige Flickinger started a three-point stretch that ended with her service ace, extending the Lions advantage. Later in the set, a kill by Marlee Arrington spurred another rally, pushing LMU ahead 18-10. The Lions dominated with a .519 hitting percentage and closed the set decisively, 25-14, after Sophia Meyers delivered a powerful kill assisted by Mia Schafer.

The Tigers responded in set two, jumping out to a 7-4 lead. The Lions rallied to tie the score several times, but a 4-0 Pacific run gave the Tigers an 18-14 edge. Despite closing the gap to 21-18 late in the set, LMU couldn't regain control, dropping the set 25-19.

Set three saw Pacific take an early 10-6 lead, but LMU turned the tide with an electrifying 8-0 spirt, capped by a Flickinger kill from Sam Hastings. The Lions held off the Tigers' efforts and sealed the set with a block and service ace by Jiana Lawson, winning 25-22.

In the fourth set, Pacific built an early 9-6 lead and maintained control for most of the set. A late push by LMU, highlighted by a Meyers kill and a three-point flurry, wasn't enough as the Tigers closed the set 25-20

The decisive fifth set was intense, with Pacific pulling ahead 6-2 early. The Lions rallied to tie the score at 12-12 after consecutive kills from Flickinger and a Lawson service ace. The teams remained deadlocked at 14-14 before Pacific secured back-to-back kills to claim the set 16-14 and the match 3-2.

Flickinger led all players with 21 kills, followed by Meyers with 19. Lawson contributed three aces and five blocks, while Hastings recorded a match-high 28 digs. Schafer led in assists with 27.

The Lions return to action on Saturday, Nov. 23, hosting the Gonzaga Bulldogs at 1 PM in Gersten Pavilion for Senior Day.
