Lions Roll Past Broncos in Straight Sets

LOS ANGELES – The Lions dominated the Santa Clara Broncos with a 3-0 sweep on Saturday afternoon, maintaining their position as the top team in the conference.

The Broncos struck first, but a powerful kill by Jiana Lawson followed by a service ace from Sophia Meyers quickly shifted momentum in LMU's favor. The set remained tightly contested, with the Lions clinging to a narrow lead. A key Broncos error sparked a 3-0 flurry, putting LMU up 12-9. Despite Santa Clara closing the gap to just two points late in the set, a clutch kill by Marlee Arrington secured a 25-21 win for the Lions.

LMU took control early, opening with a 3-0 run initiated by Olivia Toland's kill and capped by Paige Flickinger's strike, pushing the score to 8-4. A few plays later, the Lions unleashed a six-point streak, highlighted by back-to-back aces from Meyers. Another four-point burst extended LMU's lead to 21-10, leaving Santa Clara unable to recover. A decisive kill by Leah Burrell sealed the set, 25-18.

The Broncos came out strong in the third set, racing to a quick 5-0 advantage. The Lions responded with five consecutive points to even the score. Santa Clara reclaimed the lead at 11-8, but LMU stayed close. A block by Toland and Kalani Hayes started a 3-0 rally, bringing the Lions within a point at 17-16. Down the stretch, LMU surged ahead with a four-point run, capped by a Mia Schafer ace, to take their first lead of the set at 23-22. The set saw six ties before two critical errors by the Broncos handed the Lions a thrilling 30-28 set win and a 3-0 match victory.

Paige Flickinger led all players with 13 kills, while Sam Hastings recorded a match-high 13 digs. Schafer paced the Lions with 18 assists, and Lawson dominated at the net with three blocks.

Up next, LMU faces the Pacific Tigers on Nov. 21 in Moraga, CA.
