Lions Break Waves Streak with Gritty Win

LOS ANGELES—The Lions dominated the Pepperdine Waves, 3-2, Saturday afternoon, ending the Waves' unbeaten run in the WCC and extending their own home winning streak.

Pepperdine grabbed an early advantage, jumping to a 3-1 lead. Both teams exchanged 10 kills, with LMU securing six, evening the score at 7-7. The Lions then put together three consecutive 3-0 runs, highlighted by a powerful kill from Marlee Arrington, pushing them ahead 17-11. LMU maintained their momentum, closing the set with the final three points to win 25-18.

At the beginning of set two, the Lions went on a five-point streak, started by a Paige Flickinger kill, which put them up 6-4. Though the Waves tied the score shortly after, the Lions responded with three quick points to reclaim the lead at 11-9. Midway through, a Sophie Stephenson kill ignited a six-point rally, capped by a service ace from Mia Schafer, giving LMU an 18-11 cushion. Despite a late push by Pepperdine, the Lions held firm, and Arrington's decisive kill sealed the 25-21 set win.

The third set began with a fierce exchange, as both teams tallied eight kills. LMU edged out to a four-point lead, but mid-set errors allowed Pepperdine to go ahead 15-12. The Waves capitalized on their momentum with a four-point run to close the set, taking it 25-18.
In set four, the teams stayed neck-and-neck until Pepperdine gained a 14-11 lead after a brief 3-0 run. LMU closed the gap with back-to-back kills from Flickinger and Sophia Meyers, though they still trailed by one. Later, the Lions mounted a five-point streak, bringing them within one at 21-20. However, Pepperdine held on to claim the set 25-21.

The Lions came out strong in the decisive fifth set, scoring two straight kills by Jiana Lawson and Flickinger. After Pepperdine took a one-point lead at 6-5, LMU rallied with back-to-back two-point runs, regaining control. A crucial block from Leah Burrell sealed the 15-12 set win, securing the 3-2 match victory for the Lions.

Mia Schafer led all players with 34 assists, while Lawson recorded a match-high six blocks. Sam Hastings paced LMU with 23 digs, and Flickinger led the team with 21 kills.
