Lions Cruise to 3-0 Win Over Gaels

LOS ANGELES – The Lions extended their home winning streak to eight with a 3-0 sweep over the Saint Mary's Gaels on Saturday afternoon.

LMU jumped out to an early lead in the first set, sparked by a kill from Kalani Hayes during a 4-0 run, putting the Lions up 8-4. A few plays later, they stretched the margin to 14-7, benefiting from six consecutive points, including five errors from the Gaels. Though Saint Mary's briefly closed the gap with a three-point run, they never got closer than four. A late kill by Sophie Meyers capped a three-point burst that gave LMU a 24-15 lead, and the set was sealed, 25-16, with a block by Jiana Lawson and Marlee Arrington.

The second set remained tight early, with no more than a two-point margin between the teams, but the Lions stayed ahead. A service ace from Lawson gave LMU some breathing room, pushing the lead to 13-10. Midway through, three consecutive errors from Saint Mary's extended the Lions' advantage to four, prompting a timeout from the Gaels. Though SMC managed to score sporadically, LMU closed the set with five unanswered points, taking it 25-17.

LMU carried their momentum into the third set, opening with the first two points. Shortly after, a three-point burst from the Lions prompted Saint Mary's to call a timeout. After the break, Paige Flickinger and Sophie Stephenson delivered consecutive kills, extending LMU's lead to 16-7. The Lions then put together two additional scoring runs—one of five points and another of four—to dominate the set, 25-9 and secure the 3-0 victory.

Hayes and Flickinger led the match with nine kills apiece, while Hayes also posted a match-high six blocks. Mia Schafer recorded a game-leading 18 assists, and Sam Hastings topped both teams with 13 digs.

The Lions will face the Portland Pilots on Oct. 24 at 6 PM in Portland, OR.
