LOS ANGELES – The Lions remain undefeated at home after a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Toreros on Thursday night.
The Lions got on the board first with a kill from
Jiana Lawson. The set A service ace by
Delfina Schuh tied the score at 11, but the Toreros pulled away with two more 3-0 runs, eventually winning the first set, 25-22.
In set two, the Lions jumped out to an early 8-5 lead after a 4-0 run, initiated by a kill from
Kalani Hayes. USD fought back, tying the score multiple times before pulling ahead 19-17. LMU fought back late, going on a three-point run to take a 21-20 lead, and closed out the set with a strong finish, winning 25-21, with
Mia Schafer's kill securing the victory.
The Lions dominated the third set, going up 7-3 early, and extending their lead to 13-6 with a kill by
Paige Flickinger. A series of strong plays, including two more 3-0 runs, put LMU ahead by as much as 11, and
Marlee Arrington's kill clinched the set, 25-14.
USD came out strong in set four, taking an early 4-1 lead and maintaining control throughout. LMU tried to close the gap, including a mid-set 3-0 run capped by a Lawson service ace, but the Toreros held on to win 25-20, forcing a decisive fifth set.
In the final set, both teams battled evenly, but the Lions gained a slight edge with a kill from Arrington to go up 8-6. USD stayed close, but a kill from
Sophia Meyers, assisted by Schuh, secured the set 15-13 and the match 3-2 for LMU.
The Lions recorded 61 kills compared to USD's 53, with Meyers leading the team with 14 kills, followed by Flickinger with 13 and Arrington with 10. Arrington also posted a hitting percentage of .444 and a kill percentage of .556.
Sam Hastings anchored the defense with 23 digs as well.
LMU will face the Pepperdine Waves this Saturday at 1 PM in part one of the PCH Rivalry Cup at Gersten Pavilion.
