LOS ANGELES – On Thursday night, the Lions came up short against the San Francisco Dons, losing 63-38 in their WCC home opener.
Alexis Mark stood out as the lone Lion to reach double figures, contributing 18 points and securing six rebounds.
Debra Dos Santos of San Francisco had an impressive performance, achieving a double-double by the second quarter and concluding the game with 16 points and 18 rebounds.
The Lions played their second consecutive game without senior guard
Nicole Rodriguez, who was sidelined due to injury
"Nicole is the heart, outside of Alexis, on our team," says Coach Hughes. "She's the one that communicates. She also can get hot from the three-point line. She's built for moments when we're down. I think she could've kept us in the game."
LMU took an early lead as Mark scored a jumper, maintaining control until the Dons leveled the score at seven with a free throw.
Da'Ja Hamilton contributed five points in the quarter, including a significant three-pointer just over a minute before the buzzer, giving LMU a six-point advantage at 15-9. LMU maintained the lead, 15-11, heading into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, the Dons went on a 9-0 run and took the lead, 22-17.
LMU encountered challenges in securing a field goal for the following three minutes, but Mark's layup eventually pushed them to a total of 20 points. The Dons were 9-16 from the field, shooting 56.3%, resulting in them leading by 13, 21-34, going into the half.
Coming out of the locker room, the Dons maintained their dominance throughout the third and fourth quarters, ultimately securing a victory over the Lions with a 25-point lead, finishing at 63-38.
The Lions take on the Pepperdine Waves this Saturday at 2 PM in Malibu, CA, as part one of the PCH Rivalry.
