Lions Triumph Over San Diego Toreros

LOS ANGELES – The Lions defeated the San Diego Toreros, 67-60, during Saturday afternoon game. This was LMU's first win against San Diego in four years.

The Lions got a 20-piece from Alexis Mark and a solid 16-point performance from Amaya Oliver. Soufia Inoussa also chipped in 10 points in the game.

"Big win for our program," says Coach Aarika Hughes.

Oliver finished with, as mentioned, 16 points on a perfect 7-7 from the field and 2-2 from the line. She also grabbed five rebounds, three assists, and a block.

As a whole, the Lions had 20 assists and forced 20 opposing turnovers.

"When we can keep people out on the floor for long stretches, without foul trouble, I think it really helps with our cohesion, especially with our guards," said Hughes. "We were willing passers today. It's going to find the right person we just have to trust our system."

The game started off close in the first quarter with multiple lead changes. With a little more than three minutes left to go, the Lions defense was great, causing multiple turnovers for the Toreros. A three by Daylee Dunn put the Lions within one of the Toreros to end the quarter, 16-15.

During the second quarter, the Lions secured an impressive start by scoring the initial 10 points, including two significant three-pointers from Sydney Gandy and Nicole Rodriguez, allowing them to claim the lead at 25-16. San Diego initiated a comeback, going on a 6-0 run and eventually seizing the lead. However, LMU displayed resilience, mounting a 6-0 run of their own. As halftime approached, the Lions regained control, heading into the break with a four-point advantage at 37-33.

Coming out of the locker room, Oliver got the Lions on the board first with a pull-up jumper. The Lions maintained a slight advantage over the Toreros until two successful free throws brought San Diego within two points. The score was tied three times in the final three minutes of the quarter. As the third quarter concluded, both LMU and San Diego were deadlocked at 50, setting the stage for the fourth quarter.

The Lions opened up the last quarter, scoring six consecutive points giving them some wiggle room from the Toreros. With 2:13 remaining, the Lions reached their largest lead of the game, boasting a 13-point advantage at 67-53 following a successful layup by Mark. Although San Diego narrowed the deficit to single digits, the Lions ultimately secured the victory.

The Lions next game is Thursday, January 25, against the San Francisco Dons at 6 PM in San Francisco.
