Smiej Takes Home Victory in All-Lions Final

PALM DESERT, Calif. - Yassine Smiej defeated Sebastian Nothhaft in the final of the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in a battle of Lions. 
 
The all-Lions final took place on Sunday, January 14 with Smiej emerging victorious 6-4, 6-0.  
 
The pair also competed in the doubles finals after a semifinal win against a pairing from San Diego State. They fell in the final 6-2, 6-2. 
 
Sebastian Nothhaft secured his spot in the final by defeating Arthur Pantino in the semifinals. Pantino, as the No. 1 seed, had a first-round bye and proceeded to dominate Remy Tregoures from Nevada 6-1, 6-1 in the round of sixteen. Pantino continued his impressive run in the quarterfinals, dispatching Paul Theate from San Francisco with a score of 6-1, 6-4. However, his journey came to an end in the semifinals against Nothhaft. 
  
Smiej, the No. 3 seed, also earned his place in the final after a strong performance. Smiej had a bye in the first round and defeated Luca Fe D'ostani from New Mexico State 7-5, 6-1 in the round of sixteen. He continued his winning streak in the quarterfinals, overcoming Tobias Wallin from New Mexico State with a score of 7-6 (5), 6-2. In the semifinals, Smiej faced Eugenio Gonzalez from San Diego State and emerged victorious with a scoreline of 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-2. 
  
Nothhaft, the No. 4 seed, also showcased his skills on the court. With a first-round bye, he started his journey by defeating Gustavo Campos from New Mexico State 6-3, 6-2. The quarterfinals saw Nothhaft in a challenging match against Matheo Coupu from Nevada, where he emerged triumphant with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 10-5. Nothhaft's impressive run continued into the semifinals, where he defeated Pantino 7-5, 6-1. 
  
Toky Ranaivo faced a tough first-round loss to Tobias Wallin from New Mexico State but showcased resilience in the back draw, defeating Ricardo Mercado from New Mexico State 8-5. 
  
As if the singles competition wasn't thrilling enough, Nothhaft and Smiej also teamed up for the doubles quarterfinal. After a first-round bye, they faced Lafond/Friedler from San Francisco, securing a 9-7 victory.  
  
On the other side of the doubles bracket, Pantino and Ranaivo, who had a first-round bye, unfortunately lost in the quarterfinals to Branchetti/Cortimiglia with a scoreline of 6-8. 
 
This was the final singles competition of the season for the Lions, with the team portion of the schedule beginning on Saturday, January 20 against San Diego State.
