LOS ANGELES – Gael Quintero scored his first goal in a Lions uniform and the LMU men's soccer team drew with UC Davis 1-1 on Wednesday night in front of a raucous crowd at Sullivan Field. Â
Â
The Lions outshot the Aggies 13-7 and had an 8-4 advantage with shots on target as well.Â
Â
Lewis Clutton notched the first chance of the night with a right-footed effort towards the middle of the net that was saved by the visiting goalkeeper in the 5th minute. Â
Â
Massimo Oedekoven Pomponi was up to it in the first half as well. He recorded the first of three saves in the 7th minute with a nicely timed punch.Â
Â
Bradyn Knutson found some space at the back post in the 24th minute, but his headed effort was off-target. Â
Â
The breakthrough came on the half-hour mark as
Ryan Kingsford found space on the left side and slid a dangerous cross across the face of goal. Quintero instinctively got a foot to the ball that popped up and over the sliding keeper and off the crossbar down into the goal. Â
Â
Jovan Prado took a rip late in the first half, but his well-struck effort was blocked by the Aggies defense.Â
Â
Â
The first was a tough angle shot from along the endline. He used his pace to get past his man and whizzed a left footed effort that the goalkeeper touched away. Â
Â
Less than a minute later, he fired another effort low and true. It seemed destined for the bottom left corner of the net, but a smart save kept the ball out. Â
Â
Anderson was again the shot-taker just two minutes later, firing a left-footed shot into the outside of the net. The stands erupted for what looked at their angle like a screamer, but instead was ruled a goal kick.Â
Â
The Aggie equalizer came in the 75th minute on a nicely flighted ball that was headed home with conviction.Â
Â
The Lions had a chance to go ahead in the 81st minute when true freshman center back Nathan Rodrigues carried the ball forward and took a long-range effort that curled into the ground before the goalkeeper could safely catch it. The spill allowed Jovan Prado to take a shot, but his shot found the goalkeeper laying on the ground and then went out for a goal kick. Â
Â
The homestand continues on Sunday, September 10 for a matinee matchup with Sacramento State. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (PT) at Sullivan Field. Â
