Kings, Clutton Sting Hornets to Remain Unbeaten

LOS ANGELES – Ryan Kingsford scored a 90th minute penalty kick after Lewis Clutton's opener and the Lions defeated Sacramento State 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles.

The Lions went down early in the first half after the Hornets scored an incredible long-range effort in the 8th minute.

LMU continued to pressure the Hornet defense up until the breakthrough.

Clutton came on in the 16th minute and immediately started firing shots. The Welshman notched six shots with four on target in his 68 minutes of work. He was first to the ball in the 30th minute after a shot by Jovan Prado was deflected by the goalkeeper. Clutton tapped in at the far post to even the score.

The Lions continued to have chances but could not capitalize.

Anthony Wilson disguised a nice shot fake before a right-footed effort in the box that was blocked. The ball fell to Christian Ortiz. Ortiz blasted a shot over the crossbar and out for a goal kick.

As the game waned, LMU continued to attack and were awarded a chance to win for their efforts.

The second half saw five yellow cards, but no foul was more important than the 90th minute foul drawn by Clutton. While in the box, he flashed towards the endline and was dragged down and awarded a penalty.

Kingsford stepped up and slotted the ball into the right side to send the Lion faithful into a frenzy. It was Kingsford's third goal of the season.

Massimo Oedekoven Pomponi made several key saves, including an acrobatic leaping save in the 42nd minute to preserve the tie. It was one of two saves from the senior goalkeeper.

The Lions play a pair of matches this week. On Thursday, September 14, the Lions host Seattle at Sullivan Field at 7:00 p.m. (PT). They will then head to the Valley to face CSUN on Sunday afternoon beginning at 7:00 p.m. (PT).
