Macias, Lions Kennel Bulldogs in WCC Opener

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Ignacio Macias netted his first collegiate goal and the Lions started off West Coast Conference play with a 1-0 victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday night in Spokane, Wash.

The Lions (5-1-4, 1-0 WCC) and Bulldogs (2-5-4, 0-1 WCC) played a tightly contested first half, with neither team able to put anything into the net.

LMU's strong defense showed once again, only allowing one shot in the first half of play. Braden Fidelak and Okeefe Cunningham played a strong central midfield and were integral in intercepting and tackling throughout both halves. The two did a lot of work that does not show up in the box score, and they played at a very high-level tonight.

Lewis Clutton continued to fire off good shots. He recorded four shots in total and two on target.

The highlight of the match came in the 63rd minute. Christian Ortiz fired a hard cross into the danger area, and the Bulldogs' keeper came out to catch it. He spilled the catch attempt and Macias was there to boot it into the back of the net and send the Lions into a celebration. It was Macias' first collegiate goal coming in his first collegiate match.

Not to be outshined, Massimo Oedekoven Pomponi collected his third shutout in four matches. The senior drops his goals against average down to 0.95 on the season. The LMU defense has not allowed a goal from the run of play in four straight matches.

The Lions will face off against the Pacific Tigers next. That match will be played on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m. (PT). It will be available on ESPN+.
