DAVIS, Calif. - Amber McCorkle scored a stunning floated goal in the 79th minute and the Lions women's soccer team defeated UC Davis 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Davis, Calif.
The LMU defense continued to shine under second-year head coach Chris Chamides, notching a second straight clean sheet. The continuity has been a strong part, with
Genevieve Watkins,
Alice Santen and
Gabriella Marchal each playing every game together dating back to the start of the 2022 season.
The first half demonstrated that defensive toughness, with the Aggies managing only one shot. Every touch in the defensive third was met by a swarm of Lions defenders.
The Lions first dangerous attempt came in the 30th minute off the head of Watkins. Santen delivered a free kick into the danger area that Watkins met with some force, but the header went just wide of the post.
LMU won a free kick in a dangerous area once again after Megan Rucker drew a foul just outside the penalty area. Jennessa Groves stepped up to take the free kick and drove it over the crossbar.
The Lions once again demonstrated some second-half lethality as their pressure continued to force the Aggies deeper and deeper.
Alex Hobbs forced a reflex save from the Aggies goalkeeper after heading a ball that was looping underneath the bar on a cross from Groves. The goalkeeper touched it over for a corner.
On the ensuing corner, it was Rucker meeting the ball at the back post. The glancing header forced the UC Davis goalkeeper to touch the bar onto the post before it was put out of play.
The Lions finally got the breakthrough that they felt was coming on a floated shot from McCorkle. Gabi Morgan took the ball in the middle of the pitch and carried the ball forward before feeding to McCorkle on the wing. McCorkle looked like she was attempting a cross, but instead chipped the ball into the side netting for the opener.
The Lions would not face a shot the remainder of the way.
WIth the win, the Lions improved to 3-3 on the season. They will host Nevada on Thursday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m. at Sullivan Field. The match will be live streamed on ESPN+.
