PORTLAND – The Lions defeated the Portland Pilots, 3-0, in their first road game of the WCC season.
The Lions claimed an early lead in the first set, but the Pilots fought back, briefly taking the lead at 4-3. A few plays later, a kill by
Michelle Shaffer and a solid block from
Jacquelyn Moore and
Amethyst Harper quickly restored the Lions advantage, putting them ahead by three. LMU's momentum rose as they scored four consecutive points, expanding their lead to 14-8. They continued with a 3-0 run ending in a
Maddie Boerstra kill, securing a 17-9 lead. Although Portland scored two late points, it wasn't enough to overcome LMU, who clinched the set 25-14.
The Lions maintained that energy going into the second set, winning three straight rallies. Despite the Pilots scoring a couple of points, LMU held firm, utilizing a Pilots service error to spark a 5-0 run; and establish a 9-4 lead. The biggest deficit of the set came at the end when LMU scored five unanswered points, increasing their advantage by 10 and closing the set, 25-15.
Set three saw an early 6-2 lead for the Lions, with Shaffer's kill boosting the score to 11-6. Portland rallied, narrowing the gap to, 13-11, but Shaffer's back-to-back kills and a three-point flurry, including a service ace by
Lauren Patterson, pushed the Lions to a 25-20 victory.
Kari Geissberger's 1000th career kill sealed the sweep, securing a 3-0 win for LMU.
Statistically, Moore led the game with nine kills and an impressive hitting percentage of .818%, followed by seven kills from Geissberger. Shaffer and Boerstra each contributed six kills. Sam Hasting led in digs with 10. Notably, the Lions showcased their blocking skills collecting 14 blocks this game; maintaining their national ranking of No. 7 with 2.91 blocks per set.
The Lions next match is Saturday, Sep. 30, against the Gonzaga Bulldogs at 12 PM in Spokane, WA.
