SPOKANE, WA – On Saturday afternoon, LMU defeated Gonzaga in a closely contested and intense match, securing a 3-0 sweep over the Bulldogs.
Set one started off with the Bulldogs initially taking a 2-0 charge. However, a kill by
Amethyst Harper and a block from
Maddie Boerstra evened the score at 3-3. The teams exchanged points until the Lions went on a four-point run, taking a 9-8 lead. LMU extended their advantage to 14-12 with another four-point streak, started by a
Jacquelyn Moore kill. Towards the end, the Bulldogs made a comeback, scoring three in a row passing the Lions 18-17. The set remained tight, tying four more times until back-to-back kills from Harper and Boerstra secured a 25-23 victory for the Lions.
During the second set, the Lions maintained a 5-3 advantage over the Bulldogs. A key moment in the set occurred when the Lions capitalized on four consecutive errors by the Bulldogs, pushing the score to 11-6. Despite a mid-set recovery by Gonzaga, winning four rallies and closing the gap to 16-13, the Lions maintained their lead and finished the set with a service ace by Boerstra.
Just like set two, the Lions dominated early over the Bulldogs, 6-2. Gonzaga responded with three points, but a
Tyler Alcorn kill, courtesy of
Mia Schafer, ignited a 4-0 run, pulling the Lions ahead 11-6. Gonzaga had to take a timeout in an effort to regather and strategize. After a few plays, the Bulldogs secured three consecutive points without a response, yet the Lions quickly retaliated, netting four points of their own securing a 17-10 lead. Gonzaga attempted a late comeback, scoring four in a row to trail 21-17, but a decisive kill by Boerstra sealed the set at 25-19, completing the 3-0 sweep.
Geissberger led in kills with nine, followed by Harper and Boerstra with eight each. Moore dominated in blocks with six, while
Sam Hastings led in digs with 12.
Isabella Bareford contributed 17 assists, followed by Schafer with 16.
The Lions next game is on Oct. 5 against the Pacific Tigers at 7 PM in Gersten Pavilion.
