LOS ANGELES – On Saturday afternoon, the Pepperdine Waves secured a 3-1 win over the Lions, bringing LMU's winning streak to an end.
In the opening set,
Michelle Shaffer's kill put the Lions on the board first, but the Waves quickly gained control. Pepperdine strung together four consecutive points, establishing a 6-2 lead over LMU. For most of the set, the Waves maintained this advantage, but the Lions showed resilience. A
Bella Mathis kill started a three-point rally for the Lions, narrowing the gap to three points at 19-16, which prompted Pepperdine to call a timeout. The regrouping worked in their favor as the Waves returned with a five-point run, ultimately securing the set with a score of 25-17.
Moving on to the second set, Pepperdine took control early again, holding a 7-2 lead over LMU. The score tightened and eventually tied at 11-11, thanks to a kill by
Maddie Boerstra. The teams remained neck and neck, with Shaffer delivering a crucial kill that pushed the Lions to a 19-16 lead. Both sides traded points until the Waves committed two straight errors, giving the Lions a 23-19 advantage. Pepperdine made a quick comeback and came within one point of the Lions at 24-23, but
Kari Geissberger sealed the set with a kill, securing a 25-23 set win for LMU.
During the third set, the Waves quickly established a four-point advantage, leading 5-1. The Lions, however, regained momentum when Shaffer's kill was followed by a service ace from
Sam Hastings and a powerful block by both Shaffer and Mathis, evening the score at 8-8. Later in the set, the Waves went on two separate runs, including a 4-0 spree, regaining the lead at 17-13. Towards the end of the set, the Lions staged a comeback, narrowing the gap to one point at 20-19. It appeared to be anyone's set, but Pepperdine ultimately sealed it with a kill, winning 25-22.
The beginning of set four started off close, with both teams going on scoring runs. Pepperdine managed two three-point flurries, taking an 8-4 lead over LMU. Midway through the set, the Waves still held the lead, but two errors by them brought the Lions within three points at 16-13. Pepperdine regrouped and scored four in a row, extending their lead to 20-13. Despite the Lions unwavering efforts, it was not enough to win the set. The Waves claimed the fourth set with a score of 25-18, securing a 3-1 match victory.
Geissberger concluded the match with 13 kills, while Hastings led with 23 digs.
Isabella Bareford contributed 21 assists, and
Jacquelyn Moore recorded 4.0 blocks.
The Lions' next game is scheduled for Thursday, Sep. 28, against the Portland Pilots at 7 PM in Portland, OR.
