LMU Breaks Program Record with 30 Goals in Opening Day’s Second Win

LOS ANGELES – The 13th-ranked LMU men's water polo opened the season with a pair of decisive victories on Saturday, outscoring the two opponents 45-13 in the program's home invitational. The Lions began the day with a 15-3 win over Occidental before doubling its scoring output in the afternoon win. LMU topped La Verne, 30-10, behind a program-record 30 goals.

The Lions never trailed in the opening game against Occidental, taking a 5-0 lead in the first period. After the Tigers got on the board, LMU added another pair of goals to lead 7-1 at the half. The lead ballooned to 13-2 after three quarters and 15-3 at the final.

Stelios Dalmaras played the first three periods in the cage, with Can Caglar taking care of business in the final eight minutes.

Four Lions scored multiple goals in the win, led by three from Abel Romero Corbalan. Augie Renezeder, Tommaso Baldineti, and Chassen Corlett each scored a pair of goals, with Alex Marlow, Denzel Tate, Jack Dunbar, Santiago Jimenez-Donovan, Nick Leung, and Tom Diaz each scoring one apiece.

In the second game, 17 different LMU goal scorers contributed to the record-breaking win. Alex Marlow led the team with four goals and Chassen Corlett added three of his own. Eight Lions scored a pair of goals apiece. Both Andrew Vernon and Rafael Salonikios shared game-high honors with four assists apiece.

Three different Lions protected the cage against the Leopards. Stelios Dalmaras earned the win and made four saves in the first period alone. Weston Lorenzo and Can Caglar split time over the final 24 minutes and combined for six total saves.

The Lions will remain at home this week with three games, including the first night game under the newly installed Burns Aquatics Center pool lights this Wednesday against LMU alum Kyle Witt and his Fullerton Titans. A pair of ranked teams visit the Bluff over the weekend with Pepperdine playing on campus on Saturday and Stanford visiting Los Angeles on Sunday.
