NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Massimo Oedekoven Pomponi notched his first career clean sheet in a scoreless draw with CSUN on Sunday night in Northridge, Calif. Â
Â
The first half saw great chances from Tyger Smalls, who made a driving run and fired a venomous left-footed shot that stung the palms of the Matador keeper. Â
Â
Two minutes later, Aiden Spagnoli hounded the defense into a turnover and ripped an effort wide of goal. Â
Â
Ryan Kingsford had an attempt as well, coming in the 16th minute, but nothing was going in for the Lions. Â
Â
On the other end of the pitch, Pomponi was a brick wall in goal. His instincts to come out and clear long balls behind the defensive line, claim long throws and crosses, as well as his ability to stop shots led to his first career clean sheet. Â
Â
The Lions could not muster a goal in the second half either, despite having a few solid opportunities. The best opportunity came from
Anthony Wilson in a brilliant, dizzying counterattack that led to an opportunity that went just wide left. Â
Â
The Matadors were reduced to 10 men with a little after five minutes to go in the match, but the Lions could not get a goal. Â
Â
The back line of Christian Ortiz, Tyler Trusner,
Nathan Rodrigues and
Callum Stretch should be commended on another solid job as they were blocking shots and crosses all evening in front of Pomponi. All four played at least 85 minutes, with Ortiz going the full 90.Â
Â
The Lions will be back at home against Cal State Fullerton on Thursday night at Sullivan Field. That match will begin at 7:00 p.m. (PT). Â
