LOS ANGELES – The Lions secured their second victory and second clean sweep of the Boise State Classic tournament against the Montana Grizzlies.
During the first set, the Grizzlies initially took the lead. UM led LMU by one point until
Amethyst Harper's kill leveled the score at three each. The Lions gained some breathing space when
Bella Mathis scored a kill, initiating a six-point streak and bringing the score to 10-5. Later in the set, LMU and UM both went on 3-0 runs, but the Lions maintained a five-point lead, 15-10. LMU continued with two more three-point streaks, with
Kari Geissberger, Jacqueline Moore, and Harper delivering kills. The Grizzlies responded with three unanswered points, but it wasn't enough to stop the Lions, as
Maddie Boerstra's kill closed the set, 25-15.
In the second set, the Lions took the lead early on, with the score staying within two points until a Grizzlies error gave LMU a 7-4 advantage. The lead expanded further when the Lions sparked a 3-0 run, making it,11-6. A little later, a service ace by
Michelle Shaffer increased the Lions' lead to five, 16-11. LMU maintained their lead throughout the set, and a kill by Shaffer, assisted by
Mia Schafer, concluded the set, 25-18.
The third set began with both teams exchanging points until UM scored two consecutive points, briefly putting them ahead 5-4. However, the Lions quickly reclaimed the lead. A Boerstra kill initiated a four-point streak, ending with a block assist from Geissberger and Emmelyn Walters. The Grizzlies also had a four-point streak of their own a few plays later. Although the game remained relatively close, the Lions gradually increased their lead and eventually secured the set, 25-18, thanks to a kill by
Olivia Toland, sealing the 3-0 victory.
In terms of individual performance, Moore led the game with 12 kills and maintained a perfect hitting and killing percentage of 1.000%. She also contributed the most points to the team, with 13.5. Additionally, four Lions attained a hitting percentage exceeding .500%, and
Isabella Bareford also contributed 23 assists throughout the game.
The Lions will play one more match tomorrow, Sep. 16, at 9 AM PT, against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits.
