BOISE, ID – On Saturday morning, the Lions secured a 3-0 victory against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, marking their third and final win of the Boise State Classic.
In the opening set, LMU took an early lead with a 7-4 advantage over SDSU. The Lions maintained their momentum, started by
Jacquelyn Moore's kill, resulting in a quick three-point burst that forced a timeout from the Jackrabbits. As the set progressed, both teams exchanged points, with the Lions still holding a 16-10 lead. LMU further increased their lead, scoring five in a row, initiated by
Amethyst Harper's kill, and concluded with a service ace from
Sam Hastings, scoring 22-12. However, the Jackrabbits didn't surrender easily and responded with back-to-back points, narrowing the gap to 22-16. The set ultimately concluded with a combined block from
Bella Mathis and
Maddie Boerstra, sealing a 25-17 victory for LMU.
In the second set, LMU asserted their dominance early, leaving the Jackrabbits struggling to find a response. The control the Lions had translated into a remarkable 5-0 run, with SDSU scoring only one point before LMU added four more, resulting in an imposing eight-point lead of 9-1. At times during the set, LMU's advantage would reach double digits. A service error by SDSU marked a turning point, giving the Lions their most significant lead of the set at 21-9. The set concluded with a kill by
Tyler Alcorn, assisted by
Mia Schafer, ending at 25-14 in favor of LMU.
Set three was a closely contested battle, with the score rarely differing by more than two points throughout most of the set. At the midway point, a crucial kill by
Emmelynn Walters put the Lions ahead by one at 15-14, prompting the first timeout of the game. The set remained highly competitive, but another Walters kill ignited five straight points for LMU, finally extending their lead to more than two points at 24-20. The intense set reached its conclusion when a service error by SDSU granted LMU the set point, resulting in a 25-21 victory and a 3-0 win in the game.
LMU dominated the hitting percentage leaderboard, with Moore leading both teams at .600%, followed by Boerstra, Schafer, Walters, and
Michelle Shaffer, all boasting percentages above .400%.
The Lions' next match is scheduled for Sep. 21 at 7 PM against the Saint Mary's Gaels at Gersten Pavilion, in their WCC home opener.
