LOS ANGELES – The LMU Lions women's volleyball team swept the Boise State Broncos, 3-0, in Thursday night's showdown.
The Broncos took an early, 2-1, lead to start set one. However, a kill by
Kari Geissberger brought the score to a tie. Later,
Bella Mathis delivered a kill, igniting a three-point streak that pushed the Lions ahead by three points, 10-7. The Lions maintained their lead until the Broncos managed to string together three consecutive points, leveling the score once more at, 14-14. LMU responded quickly, securing five unanswered points to regain the lead at 19-14. Towards the set's conclusion, BSU started to narrow the gap, coming within two points at 22-19. Nevertheless,
Jacquelyn Moore's decisive kill brought the set to a close, giving LMU the set one win, 25-21.
Set two unfolded as another tightly contested battle. The score remained within a one-point difference until LMU committed an attacking error, allowing BSU to pull ahead by two points, 16-14. The Broncos maintained their lead until a combined block by Geissberger, Mathis, and
Michelle Shaffer initiated a three-point streak, propelling the Lions to a 19-18 lead. The two teams found themselves tied once again at 21-21, but the Lions scored four consecutive points, securing set two with a score of 25-21.
The third set mirrored the intensity of the previous two. LMU established an early lead of 3-1 as the set started. While the Broncos tied the score twice, LMU clung to their lead and expanded it with a five-point streak. As the match neared its conclusion, the competition tightened. Consecutive kills by Shaffer positioned the Lions within five points of securing the set, at 20-16. However, the Broncos showed resilience. Both teams traded points over the next six plays, and then the Broncos notched back-to-back points, narrowing the gap to just two points, with the Lions leading, 23-21.
Maddie Boerstra's kill put the Lions within a point of victory, but the Broncos remained committed. A kill by BSU initiated a three-point streak for them, resulting in a tied score at 24. The Lions needed to secure a two-point lead, and they did just that. Back-to-back kills courtesy of
Amethyst Harper and Shaffer pushed LMU ahead of BSU, clinching set three with a score of, 26-24, and securing a match score of 3-0.
Geissberger led both teams in kills with 14 and had a hitting percentage of .667%. Shaffer followed with 11 kills of her own. Mathis also led both teams with five blocks, and so did
Sam Hastings with 14 digs.
The Lions will continue to play tomorrow, Sept. 15, at 3 p.m. PT against the Montana Grizzlies.
