LOS ANGELES – Down by one, playing a man down, the LMU men's soccer team enjoyed a wild comeback that culminated in Tyler Trusner's free kick goal to lead the Lions past the visiting Redhawks 3-2 on Thursday night at Sullivan Field. Â
Â
Trusner was thrust into action in the second half after
Lewis Clutton received his second yellow card of the evening. Coming off the bench, Trusner assisted the game-tying goal and then took the game-winner for himself.Â
Â
LMU got the opener on a well-worked set piece coming from a corner kick. Ryan Kingsford took the short corner from Steven Anderson and immediately fed it back to him. Anderson took a couple steps and ripped a left-footed shot from just outside the box that snuck inside the near post for a one goal lead.Â
Â
Seattle U answered with a goal of their own in the 35th minute and then claimed their own lead three minutes later.Â
Â
The Lions, down one at the half, never believed they were out of the game. After Clutton was sent off for earning a second yellow card, Trusner came in and the energy on the field changed.Â
Â
Kingsford and Tyger Smalls were demonstrating their advanced interplay as a strike pair and despite the one-man advantage to the Redhawks, the Lions still had chances. Â
Â
After the Lions earned a free kick outside the box, Trusner sent the goalkeeper flailing but rattled the framework.
Callum Stretch followed up with a calm, header finish to tie things up at two. Â
Â
Trusner again stepped up less than five minutes later when Smalls was fouled outside the box. The game evened after a Redhawk was sent off for his second yellow. Trusner struck the ball sweetly with his left foot and curled it over the wall and into the right side of the net, leaving the opposing goalkeeper rooted to the spot. Â
Â
The crowd erupted as the bench flooded into the corner to celebrate with the sliding Trusner. Â
Â
It was the first career goal and the first career assist for the senior out of El Dorado Hills, Calif. Â
Â
LMU is back in action on Sunday night as they head to the Valley to face off against CSUN at 7:00 p.m. (PT). Sunday's match will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
